Transfer Case. ATF D3M. 1.5 liters/1-5/8 quarts. 18mm socket (torque 26ft/lbs) ** ALWAYS loosen the fill plug prior to loosening the drain plug. This is to ensure you have access/ability to fill/add the new fluid, once you drain all the old fluid. I attached a couple YT vids of “similar” fluid changes.When you are ready to pull the drain plug on the t-case, thread it out with your fingers and set your drain pan underneath it. This should catch all the fluid and you should just let it drip out. Undoing the drain plug: Fluid Running Out: Once it is emptied as good as it's going to get, put the drain plug back in.The Amsoil vehicle look-up said use Amsoil Mult-vehicle, ATF but also listed every Tom, **** and Harry car maker and transmission. So, basically 2 quarts every 60,000 miles. The Ram manual suggests ATF +4 for the six speed automatic transmission but not the transfer case. I wonder why. Mar 1, 2020 · For the JK that means changing the transfer case fluid every 60k miles, the manual trans oil every 30K. The TC takes 2 liters/2.1 quart of ATF+4 that satisfies Chrysler MS-9602 specs. I personally use the MOPAR brand ATF+4 in mine. $30 for 5 liters on Amazon. Same fluid is used for power steering. Torque plugs to 20 ft-lbs. 14 mm Allen plugs.

You do need a 10mm hex head to get the drain plug out and when it comes out the fluid shoots back a good 8" or so.

The fluid should also be changed if the transfer case has been submerged in water. Your mechanic can check the fluid condition first and change it if it's dirty. The transfer case is easy to change but it does take special fluid that you will have to buy at the dealer. If I recall it takes 2 qts but you might want to get 3 to make sure. Usually the transfer case is good for a lot more miles, 60000 if I recall. It is the rear differential on the AWD models that call for the first change around 15000 miles, and then about every 30000 miles after that. A number "3" on the maintenance minder display means change the transfer case and transmission fluid.
